"Downward Spiral" has a very deep
meaning. I can truly say that this album is more meaningful
than any other album I have listened to. This album changed
my life completely. I really consider this album the most
important.
Of course, this album also includes the image of opposition
that was in "Broken & Fixed." The idea tells
us revolutionary ideas can not be created without breaking
existing ones. We should focus on negative aspects in this
world and turn those into positive. This is the main idea
that Trent tells us in this album.
I consider that "Downward Spiral"
means "birth canal." Maybe it is difficult to
understand for guys, but when babies come into this world,
they enter with a spiral motion. Also, they come out head
first, that means they come out downward. When I noticed
this, I was thrilled because of its deep significance.
When Trent was working on this album, he
was in Europe to play second fiddle to GN'R after the Lollapalooza
Tour. The audience completely booed him off the stage, which
shocked him at the time. After that incident, he just sat
alone on the floor of his hotel room. Later, he mentioned
that the concept of the album, "Downward Spiral,"
flashed into his mind at this time. He thought that if he
breaks existing ideas with completely negative power, would
probably be able to create completely positive ideas. This
is the concept of TDS.
All of his albums are like chapters in a
story that concludes with the album titled "Hurt."
Yes, the music video of "Hurt" shows a dead, rotting
animal in the end. In the music video, the tape is recorded
backward and so that the scene looks as if the dead animal
is brought back to life. I strongly believe that this reincarnation
represents the message from Trent.
Most of the songs on this album play without
a break in between. In the middle of this continuous song,
"A Warm Place" is played. This song has a message
from Trent that says "remember that there is a warm
place after all things made you think there is no future."
This "warm place" should be interpret as "uterus."
There is a warm, peaceful place that everybody knows. The
music does not stop at this point because we should not
stop moving in that warm place. Now, we have to give ourselves
birth. This is a very important point. >>

If people only pay attention to Trent's
self-destructive quality, no one will understand the real
meaning behind his music. The lines in "Closer"
are so beautiful! When I read the lines carefully, I was
so moved by how beautifully Trent writes. In the song titled
"Closer to God" of the "Closer" version,
he writes "I wanna fuck you! I wanna taste you! I wanna
feel you! I wanna be you!" Has there ever been any
better way to express one's love than this??! This is the
ultimate way, isn't it?!
How can so many people believe that Trent
promotes "self destruction and self persecution"
when he writes such beautiful songs? Everything that Trent
expresses in "Downward Spiral" represents a paradox
which many misinterpret. In fact, Trent is sorry for the
person who committed suicide after listening to the song.
At that time, he clearly said "that is not what I meant!"
The sound on those albums are good, so I
recommend that you listen to them without skipping any or
taking a break between songs. Sampling sounds in many parts
of the songs produce various effects, like subliminal messages.
These effects and images will never make you tired of listening
to the songs. Please pay special attention to his voice.
When you listen to his voice, you will feel that he sings
from the bottom of his heart in order to spread his message
to listeners.
All of the words and situations that I cited
here are real words and situations that Trent revealed in
his interviews. I did not create these things.
One day, I was driven by an impulse to change
myself when I was listening his songs. More and more I noticed
the deep meanings of the albums, more and more I thought
that I needed to change myself.
At one point, I just freed myself from everything that restricted
me. I am not lying about anything. This is the reborn and
recreated me. Like how new systems are reinstalled, I reproduced
myself. Because of that, I have a life full of happiness!
Everyday, I am happy!! Even if I die tomorrow, I have no
regrets.
I give all my thanks and love to Trent Reznor
for giving me a chance to create my new life. He is a very
important person for me. I love him truly. . .
